Strange Odors from Your Rockwall or Forney Furnace?

Let’s See What’s Going On.

It’s that time of year again. Time for hearty soups, fleece blankets, and cozy sweatshirts. It’s also time to start up your home heating system and make your home a warm and inviting retreat from the cold outside.

But if you notice an unusual odor as your furnace kicks into high gear for the first time, it could be an indication that something is not quite right. While some very faint odors are common when a furnace cycles on for the first time after hibernating all summer, others could lead to system failure, or worse, a dangerous explosion.ABSOLUTE FURNACE ODORS HEATING

So how do you know what odors to look for and when to call a professional? Here are four of the most common furnace odors and their causes.

  1. If you notice a dusty or smoky smell, first make sure that your heat registers are open throughout your house. For proper air circulation, at least 80% of your home’s registers should remain open. If that’s not the case, it could simply be that your furnace is burning off the dust that has accumulated on its components over the warm weather months. The dusty smell is just as likely coming from air flowing your ducts, an environment where dust loves to gather.  We recommend a thorough duct cleaning every 3-4 years.
  2. An electrical burning smell usually means system components or wires are damaged and causing the unit to overheat. It’s best to shut the furnace off and call an HVAC contractor who will inspect the furnace and repair or replace any necessary parts.
  3. A musty, moldy smell is most often a sign of mold growth in your vents or on system components, typically due to moisture build-up. The mold would need to be eradicated and the source of the moisture identified and fixed in order to prevent this problem and stop the flow of mold spores into your living space.
  4. The most dangerous smell – a rotten egg or sulfur odor – requires immediate action, as it could mean you have a gas leak in your furnace, which could lead to an explosion. Evacuate your home immediately, no matter what time of day. Then call 911 from a safe location.

Your best move, always, is to have your heating system cleaned and inspected at the start of the heating season, strange odors or not.  It’s your best bet for a season long of safe and reliable operation, not to mention lower utility costs.  To schedule service and check one more thing off your “worry list”, contact Absolute Air today.

Why Won’t My Furnace Turn on in Forney or Terrell?

Your home’s best friend through the colder months in Forney and Terrell is a well-running furnace.air

The longer you’ve had it, chances are the more you take it for granted.  Sorry to be the bearer of not-so-glad tidings, but it’s not going to last forever.  As time goes by, it’s common for a furnace to begin acting up.  So, by understanding the three main components of your heating system you’ll have a better idea of what the problem might be.

The heat source.

Aptly named, this is where the heat originates. If your furnace is gas-burning and it is not heating, then the furnace most likely is not receiving the fuel it needs to ignite.

The distribution system.

This component to your heating system is responsible for delivering the heated air throughout your home, i.e. your ductwork, vents, and registers. If your furnace turns on but heat doesn’t seem to be reaching the rooms in your home, the distribution system is most likely the culprit.

The thermostat.

A faulty or malfunctioning thermostat can cause your furnace to turn off and on repeatedly or not at all. Since the thermostat is responsible for sending a signal to your furnace to turn on or off, it can easily be the source of the problem if your heat is in short supply.

If you experience problems with your furnace this winter, particularly if it doesn’t respond when you try to turn it on, follow the steps below to see if you can get it going again:

  • First, check the circuit breaker to make sure the furnace is receiving power. Also look for a secondary power switch, located on the furnace itself.
  • Check the furnace for a ‘reset’ button, which is typically found on or around the motor housing. For a gas furnace, leave the unit off for approximately 30 minutes before pressing the button to let the unit cool off first. If that doesn’t do the trick, wait another 30 minutes and try again.
  • If you have a natural gas furnace, inspect the pilot light to make sure it’s functioning properly. Check that the gas supply is turned on as well.
  • Ensure that your thermostat has been set correctly. Increase the temperature setting by 5 degrees to trigger the unit to turn on.

How to Get your Home Ready for Fall Hands-on

Do you welcome the fall season with giddy excitement or grudgingly make your peace with summer coming to an end? Either way, there’s no denying that fall is here. Maybe not according to the calendar just yet, but the days are getting shorter, the thermometer is dropping, and fall fashions are out in force.

Still, before your thoughts turn to apple picking and pumpkin carving, make sure that your biggest investment – you home – is ready to embrace fall and the colder weather ahead. A little time spent now, can save you time, and money, later.

  1. Spring isn’t the only season for deep cleaning. Take the time to launder drapes and comforters, vacuum behind and under furniture, refrigerators, and your stove to reduce allergens and improve air quality. Also clean or replace your HVAC filter, and if you run a humidifier clean the plates or pads to keep it running efficiently.
  2. Keep your fires burning bright…and safe! Inspect your wood stove, and schedule a Kaufmanprofessional cleaning of your chimney.
  3. Prevent drafts and heat loss by sealing or caulking any cracks around your windows and doors. Now is also a good time to replace screen windows and doors with energy-efficient storm windows and doors.
  4. Prepare your home comfort system by scheduling an HVAC tune-up. A small investment now could save you hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars should your furnace or boiler decide to quit in the middle of winter.
  5. Conduct a safety inspection. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace batteries as needed. Have a family safety plan in place in the event of a fire and make sure your fire extinguishers are full and at the ready.
  6. Make sure your gutters and down spouts are free of debris, and inspect your roof for broken, loose, or missing shingles or tiles.
  7. Prep your garden by clearing away dead foliage. If you utilize a compost pile, be careful not to throw any weeds in the mix unless you want to lay down a fresh bed of weeds on your lawn come spring.
  8. Vacuum your vents and registers in preparation for the warm air that will soon be flowing through them.

Allow us, for just a moment, to return to point #5.  You know, the part about having your heating system professionally serviced.  All joking aside, it’s an important fall and winter preparedness step that will help your system run better, last longer, and cut back on your home heating costs.  Contact Absolute Air today to schedule service so you can check #5 off your to-do list.

Tips for Improving Indoor Air Quality in Kaufman & Forney

Keeping the air inside your home free and clear of pollutants can be a difficult task, even for home owners in Kaufman and Forney who conscientiously make a concerted effort to keep the air fresh, clean, and healthy.Little girl blows her nose

Sometimes the problem comes from not knowing all the different sources of airborne toxins, of which there are many, such as:   cleaning supplies, adhesives, pesticides brought in the house on the bottom of shoes, and cleaning solution byproducts.  Did you also know that new carpeting and rugs can release harmful gases or VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into the air?

It’s a lot to contend with, which is why Absolute Air offers you the following helpful advice:

  • Use only materials that are non-toxic, including paint, caulks, adhesives, upholstery, carpeting, and even manufactured furniture. Even some inexpensive versions of these products that claim to be “non-toxic” can still release harmful toxins into the air. Read the label carefully, do your web homework, and look for brands that are the least toxic options. They may cost a little more, but breathing clean air day in, day out is worth a few extra pennies.
  • Whenever possible, never work on projects that use paint, wood stains, adhesives and other finishes inside your home whenever possible. Setup your workspace outside where the fumes that are released by these materials and won’t become trapped inside your home. If there’s no way around it, wear a surgical mask while you’re working and make sure the room or space is well ventilated.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, and clean up frequently.  Be sure to remove and clean the filters inside the vacuum at least once a month. Sweep and mop floors frequently, as well. The more dust and dirt you remove from your home, the fewer particles you’ll be breathing in.
  • Become a horticulturalist.  Well, sort of.  Because simply by purchasing and nurturing more indoor plants, you’ll be acquiring a natural means to filter our harmful substances from the air.
  • Change furnace and air filters once a month. Your filters attract and hang onto dust, pollen, bacteria and much more.  Then, when you heating or cooling system fan turns on, the air pushes some of those pollutants into your duct work and then into your home.  Clean filters are a great defense.

At Absolute Air, we offer several indoor quality solutions, include whole-house air filters that we install inside your ductwork where they trap more than 99% or the pollutants that pass through your ductwork while your home comfort system fan is blowing.

For that and more indoor air quality ideas and assistance, contact Absolute Air today.

Air Conditioning Problems in Terrell & Forney

Is your air conditioning system not quite doing the job you expect of it here in Terrell & ForneyForney?  As in, it’s working, but delivering the kind of cool, comfortable temperatures it used to, or at least not without a soaring electrical bill.  There are several things that could be causing it to under-perform, and many of them are relatively simple fixes:  those that won’t require you to purchase a brand new AC system.

For an accurate diagnosis air conditioning forney tx, you’re going to need the services of your local HVAC professional.  And these are a few of the things he’s going to look at first:

  1. Too little or too much refrigerant. When the refrigerant in your AC system isn’t balanced correctly, it won’t cool near as efficiently. Refrigerant is a vital component to your system’s ability to produce cold air. An experienced technician can easily fix the problem by adding or removing refrigerant and balancing the system.
  2. The wrong filter. If your AC seems to be running frequently or “working hard” to keep your home cool, it could be a filter problem. First, a dirty filter will block air flow into the system, so filters should be cleaned or changed monthly, as needed. Second, a filter that is too thick also can block air flow.
  3. Leaky ductwork. One major cause of air conditioner inefficiency is leaking ducts. The ductwork in your home should be airtight so that the cold air your AC produces can be distributed in the right areas of your home. If your ductwork has cracks or gaps in the attic or crawlspace, then cool air is being lost. Having your ducts inspected and repaired could result in a small expense with a huge up side.
  4. Frozen inside coil. Restricted air flow can cause the coil inside your air handler to freeze.  When that happens, no more cool air.  If you discover the problem on your own, run the system’s fan only for about four hours, allowing the ice to melt.  If that doesn’t work, then you’re going to need professional assistance.
  5. Too few return ducts. Most of the time, air conditioners are equipped with one main return which is responsible for pulling and venting the warm air from the entire house. So, if you notice that certain rooms are warmer than others, the solution could be as simple as adding an additional return or two.

When all is said and done, all you want is an air conditioning system you don’t have to worry about.  So, for your added peace of mind, contact Absolute Air today to request our AC system tune-up and inspection.  We’ll thoroughly check both the inside and outside components to help your system run better, last longer, and with fewer repairs.  We look forward to your call for AC repair in Forney Texas.

The Benefits of Balanced Humidity in Kaufman & Forney

New air conditioning systems are spot on in helping to de-humidify your home.  Not so much, however, with older systems. kaufman

At the same time, having the right level of humidity in your home is not just a summer time issue.  For example, if humidity levels are too low as they often are in the winter, you may experience dry skin, sore throats, crack fingertips, and a higher incidence of cold and flu-like symptoms.  Wood floors and furniture can dry up too from the lack of moisture.  Ever notice, for example, how your front door tends to shrink down somewhat in the winter and then expand within the doorframe when summer rolls around?  That’s imbalanced humidity at work.

During the summer when the humidity level soars through the roof, figuratively speaking, mold and mildew can accumulate, wallpaper can peel, and your ceilings can develop wet spots.  Plus, high humidity has a very distinctive odor that’s impossible to miss, especially when you first walk into your home or that part of your home where the humidity levels are off.

So, here’s a pop quiz:  what do high and low levels of humidity have in common?  Both negatively impact the quality of your indoor air.  And that alone is worth doing something about.

With a whole-house humidity control system from Absolute Air, you can maintain the ideal level of humidity – between 35-45% – all year long.  We can install a right-sized system directly connected to your home comfort system so that the air that passes through your ducts is always at the desired level.  That in combination with a whole-house air filtration system can really clean up the air, and have everyone in your family breathing a whole lot easier in very short order.
